Garam masala is an aromatic and flavorful blend of spices commonly used in one of my favorite cuisines – Indian cuisine. Garam refers to the heat in the spice mix, and masala means spice blend. This garam masala spice mix can be made with as much heat as you like or no heat at all by simply adjusting the amount of chili powder you add.
I love Indian infused dishes. The flavors are bold and complex and can be made without adding a lot of fat and calories. The spices used in this garam masala spice mix have a variety of health benefits including anti-inflammatory properties, antioxidants, aids in digestion, and aids in building strong immunity just to name a few.
Because Indian cuisine dishes have so many wonderful spices which create such wonderful complex flavors, it was hard for me to make them as often as I wanted to until I realized I could simply make my spice blend ahead, and store it for when I need it. Now, I can create complex flavors in dishes quickly and easily.
There are a lot of recipes for garam masala, and they probably are all delicious. I too have a lot of variations of this recipe, but this is one of my favorites that I use regularly. It’s a must to keep handy. Not only does this garam masala spice blend add delicious complex flavors to dishes, but it is also delicious smelling. Your home will be filled with a wonderful soothing aroma as your favorite dishes cook.
My Garam Masala Recipe
The last four ingredients which are whole spices are all included in one inexpensive bag of whole garam masala. You get enough whole spices to fill up a little more than one large mason jar, and the cost of the bag is only about $5.00. Spices can be expensive, but this definitely is not. You get cardamom pods, cinnamon sticks, bay leaves, cloves, peppercorn, cumin seeds, coriander seeds, and more. These spices can be used in a variety of other cuisines and dishes like Italian, American, Chinese, Thai and more. I love to add whole cumin seeds to rice, cloves to ham, bay leaves to pasta dishes, and peppercorns to everything. Delicious!
• 2 Tablespoons Chili Powder
• 2 Tablespoons Ground Cumin
• 6 Tablespoons Ground Coriander OR 4 Tablespoons of a store bought garam masala (where the main ingredient is coriander)
• 1 Tablespoon Turmeric
• 1 Tablespoon Salt
• 5 Black Cardamom Pods (ground in spice or coffee grinder)
• 10 Cloves (ground in spice or coffee grinder)
• 3 Cinnamon Sticks (ground in spice or coffee grinder)
• 10 Peppercorn (ground in spice or coffee grinder)
For the third ingredient down, I prefer to use 8 tablespoons of store bought ground garam masala where the main ingredient is coriander. I like that it also includes fennel, bayleaves, nutmeg and a blend of other spices. This combination of so many spices adds to the complexity of the flavor. Delicious!
- Grind all whole spices with a spice grinder or coffee bean grinder into a thin powder.
- Transfer ground spice mix to your storage bowl.
- Measure out and add the rest of the spices to your storage bowl.
- Mix the spices and store. I prefer to store my spice mix in a small container in the freezer to preserve the freshness.
